What is bio-identical hormone replacement therapy?

The word "bio-identical hormones" refers to plant-derived hormones that are biologically the same as those produced in the body. These hormones are derived from plant tissues and are scientifically developed in laboratories to match natural human hormones accurately. Then the hormones are compounded into a simple and effective hormone delivery by creams, gels, pills, and pellets.

Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT), like other forms of hormone replacement therapy (HRT), is designed to replace hormones that we lose during menopause and andropause. The restoration of lost hormones can alleviate symptoms resulting from hormonal imbalances.

When Should I Start BHRT?

Ideally, you should start BHRT when you realize that you suffer from peri-menopause, menopause or andropause symptoms that impede your ability to enjoy a high quality of life. This does not mean that BHRT alone can mitigate the negative effects of menopause or andropause. Lifestyle changes such as a healthier diet and physical activity could also help reduce these symptoms. Simply the combination of bio-identical hormones and a healthy lifestyle could be all that you need to correct the imbalance of your hormone levels.

Synthetic HRT vs BHRT

Quality is what distinguishes BHRT from traditional HRT that uses synthetic hormones. Synthetic hormones are mass-produced and marketed to the general public in different predetermined strengths. BHRT uses natural hormones, often derived from plants, that are chemically similar to the natural hormones in the human body.

Risk With Synthetic HRT

High blood pressure, blood clots, higher risk of heart disease, and a higher risk of cancer are a few of the side effects with synthetic hormones/HRT.

Risks of BHRT

BHRT is used to treat symptoms of hormonal imbalances, such as hot flashes, sweats at night, libido loss, fatigue, weight gain, mood changes, and irritability. Benefits and risks are associated with BHRT, as are many other medicines. Bio-identical hormone advantages, however, far outweigh the risks. In general, the side effects of BHRT are mild if at all. All bio-identical hormones are compounded based on the individual diagnostic results of each patient. We have a detailed blog with more information here.

Where Do We Get Our BHRT?

At The WAE Clinic, we have vetted the pharmacies that we receive BHRT from, and we only cooperate with those who comply with the strictest federal quality and safety standards. These pharmacies also provide quality tests on the individual batches of their compound hormones.

Our practitioner will review your lab studies, comprehensive exam, and lifestyle factors to develop a personalized, extensive treatment plan. Men and women can achieve hormonal balance and improve overall health by combining BHRT, targeted supplementation, and lifestyle strategies tailored to their individual needs.
